Welcome to the May 2008 edition of the About Chinese Medicine Quarterly.

Obesity is considered as a serious and growing public health problem. It is a fact that Chinese emigrants do not become overweight as easily as their children born in the West.

But what makes one person bound for obesity and another for slenderness? What is the Chinese theory and ways to deal with obesity and overweight. READ ON!


Obesity or Slenderness

Some people eat a lot but remain skinny. Others eat a little but become overweight. The growth of the human body is like growing a tree. When the tree foundation is solid, the tree will be strong and more difficult to be destroyed in a later stage. In similar way, when a person's internal organs are nourished well in childhood, they tend to work hard afterwards and could make you overweight.

It is not always true that the more our body is nourished, the better our body is. We have to add a condition to make it a true statement: The more our body is nourished, the better our body is provided our body is well balanced.


Well-Balanced Body

Our internal organs are not always cooperative with each other. When an organ is excessively strong, it will weaken another or even cause harm to another organ. Accordingly to the Chinese theory of internal organs, when the stomach and spleen are over-nourished, it weakens the kidneys and bladder. When the kidneys and bladder are over-nourished, it weakens the liver and gall bladder�

We eat just to please the mouth and the stomach. Sweet foods are pleasing to the mouth, so we eat them more often and in large quantities. Bitter foods are good for the heart, but we seldom eat them because they are not pleasing to the mouth. Pungent goods are good for the lungs, but we don�t eat them as often as sweet foods (for the same reason).


Enjoying Meals and Staying Slim

Try to use the ingredients that can be cooked together to please our mouths and do not over-nourish our stomachs. Below listed the organic actions, flavors and energies of some of the ingredients we normally use:

Cinnamon bark: hot; pungent and sweet; affects the liver and kidneys.

Cloves: warm, pungent; affects the stomach, spleen and kidneys.

Green onion: warm; pungent; affects the lungs and stomach.

Fennel: warm; pungent; affects the kidneys, bladder and stomach.

Red chili: hot; pungent; affects the heart and spleen.

Black pepper: hot; pungent; affect the stomach and large intestine.


Burning Fire of the Kidneys

In Chinese medicine, there are four basic tonics: energy tonics, blood tonics, yin tonics and yang tonics. Foods called yang tonics can increase the burning fire of the kidneys. And increasing the burning fire of the kidneys may help to lose weight.

Animals� kidneys (pork, beef, lamb or chickeh) are highly recommended yang tonics food. There are three advantages to eat kidneys:

� Have little fat

� Easily to digest

� Tone up the kidney functions

Other recommended foods are:

� Liver (chicken, pork and beef)

� Shrimps

� Mussels

� Dried green raspberries

� Yam

� Walnuts
